Many people see a little pink in the sink and assume they brushed too hard. In reality, healthy gums do not bleed, even with firm brushing. Bleeding is inflammation, and inflammation is your gums asking for help. The good news: at this stage, the problem is completely reversible.
Gingivitis vs periodontitis
Gingivitis is the early stage. Plaque bacteria along the gum line irritate the gums, which become red, puffy and bleed easily. There is no permanent damage yet. With a professional cleaning and better home care, gums return to health within a couple of weeks.
Periodontitis is what gingivitis becomes if it is ignored. The inflammation spreads below the gum line, pockets form around the teeth, and the bone that holds the teeth begins to dissolve. Teeth eventually loosen. Bone lost to periodontitis does not grow back, which is why catching gingivitis early matters so much.
Common causes of bleeding gums
- Plaque and tartar build-up from missed brushing or flossing
- Starting to floss after a long break (bleeding usually stops within a week)
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy
- Smoking, which also masks bleeding while worsening the disease
- Diabetes and some medications, including blood thinners
- Vitamin C or K deficiency (rare)

How to stop gums bleeding at home
- Brush twice daily for two minutes with a soft brush, angling the bristles toward the gum line.
- Clean between the teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes. Keep going even if it bleeds at first.
- Use a fluoride toothpaste; an antibacterial mouthwash can help short-term.
- Stop smoking, and manage blood sugar if you have diabetes.
When to see the dentist
If bleeding continues for more than two weeks of good home care, or if you notice receding gums, loose teeth, persistent bad breath or pus, book a visit. We measure your gum pockets, remove tartar above and below the gum line, and set a maintenance schedule. Most gum disease is treated without surgery when caught in time.
Gum disease is painless until it is advanced. Bleeding is the only early warning you get. Listen to it.
