How Often Should You Visit the Dentist? A Checkup and Cleaning Guide

Six months is the rule of thumb, but the right interval depends on your risk. Here is what happens at a checkup and who needs to come more often.

How Often Should You Visit the Dentist? A Checkup and Cleaning Guide

Most people visit the dentist only when something hurts. By then, a small cavity has often become a root canal, and a bit of gum bleeding has become bone loss. Regular checkups flip that pattern: we find problems when they are small, cheap and painless to fix.

The six-month rule, and when it changes

For most healthy adults and children, a checkup and professional cleaning every six months is ideal. Your dentist may recommend visits every three to four months if you:

  • Have gum disease (periodontitis) or a history of it
  • Smoke or have diabetes, both of which affect gum healing
  • Get cavities frequently or have many existing fillings and crowns
  • Wear braces, which trap plaque around brackets
  • Are pregnant, as hormonal changes make gums more sensitive

What happens at a checkup

1. Examination

Your dentist checks every tooth for decay and cracks, measures your gums for signs of disease, looks at your bite and existing dental work, and screens the soft tissues of the mouth. Digital X-rays are taken when needed, typically once a year, to see between the teeth and under the gums.

2. Professional cleaning

Even with excellent brushing, tartar builds up in spots a toothbrush cannot reach. An ultrasonic scaler removes it painlessly, and polishing leaves teeth smooth and stain-free. Most patients describe the feeling afterwards as "finally clean".

3. Advice and plan

You leave knowing exactly where you stand: what is healthy, what to watch, and what needs treatment, with a clear price for anything recommended.

Why prevention is the best value in dentistry

A filling costs a fraction of a root canal and crown. A cleaning costs a fraction of gum surgery. Every six-monthly visit is an investment that avoids far bigger bills later, and it keeps your natural teeth for life.

Signs you should not wait for your next checkup

  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet
  • Pain when biting
  • Persistent bad breath
  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • A loose adult tooth
