Twenty years ago, straightening your teeth meant one thing: metal braces. Today you can choose between metal braces, tooth-coloured ceramic braces and removable clear aligners. Each works well in the right hands and the right case. Here is how our orthodontists help patients in Giza decide.
How braces work
Braces are small brackets bonded to each tooth and connected by a thin wire. Your orthodontist adjusts the wire every four to eight weeks, applying gentle, continuous pressure that moves teeth into position. Because they are fixed, braces work 24 hours a day without any effort from you.
How clear aligners work
Aligners are a series of transparent, removable trays made from a digital scan of your teeth. Each tray moves teeth a fraction of a millimetre, and you switch to the next tray every one to two weeks. They must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day and removed only for eating and brushing.
Comparing the two
Appearance
Aligners are nearly invisible. Ceramic braces are discreet, and metal braces are the most visible. For many adults and professionals this is the deciding factor.
Comfort and hygiene
Aligners have no wires to irritate the cheeks and can be removed for brushing and flossing, which makes hygiene easier. Braces need extra care around brackets, and certain sticky or hard foods are off the menu.
Discipline
This is the honest trade-off. Aligners only work if you wear them. Patients who forget or take them out too often finish late or need a new set of trays. Braces cannot be forgotten.
Complexity of the case
Mild to moderate crowding, spacing and relapse after previous treatment respond very well to aligners. Severe rotations, large bite corrections and cases that need teeth to move vertically are often more predictable with braces.
Treatment time and cost
For simple cases, aligners can be faster, sometimes six to nine months. For complex cases the timelines are similar, typically 12 to 24 months. In Egypt, metal braces remain the most affordable option; aligners cost more because of lab fees for each set of trays.

What about children and teenagers?
Braces are usually recommended for younger patients because they do not depend on compliance, and they allow the orthodontist to guide growing jaws. Teen-specific aligners exist, but we discuss them case by case.
Our recommendation
- Choose aligners if your case is mild to moderate, discretion matters to you and you are confident you will wear them.
- Choose ceramic braces if you want a discreet fixed option for a moderate or complex case.
- Choose metal braces if you want the most affordable, most predictable treatment and appearance is not a concern.
Whatever you choose, retainers after treatment are essential. Teeth have memory and will drift back without them. At Waly Dental Clinic, retainers are part of every orthodontic plan.
